The fascists are organized in militia in the streets of Angers

Following their dissolution, the social veneer of the fascists of the alvarium/RED is no more, return to unlimited violence with the guilty silence of the local authorities, the complicity of the bourgeoisie and the protection of the police

Between anti-fascists, we are used to using the slogan so often put forward by the city about the so-called good life that reigns there: “Angers first city in France where life is good*. “We add a small asterisk to it to specify:” * for fascists. »

Whether in Saint-Brévin, Annecy or Lyon, this year recurring media images are reminiscent of events in Italy in the early 1920s, when the agrarian squadrism and its gangs repressed social protest movements. Their slogan “Blows, blows and more blows, blows in quantity.” was unequivocal as to their mode of action. These bands under the leadership of a leader represented a substantial support for fascism in the making even if it was an auxiliary force over which at the beginning Mussolini had no real control.

What is happening in Angers at the end of June-beginning of July is partially reminiscent of this traumatic moment in Italian history. Hot flashback (and therefore susceptible to rapid changes) on a sequence that exposes the complacency and powerlessness of local authorities towards nationalist activists.

Following the assassination of young Nahel by the police in Nanterre, a call to demonstrate against police violence and racism is circulating. Appointment is given in front of the town hall of Angers, Friday June 30, at 8 p.m. 250 people defy the ban on demonstrations. There follows a short, tense face-to-face with the ferry with reinforced staff, supported by uniformed cops and nothing less than a plane chartered by the prefecture to monitor the neighborhoods and the gathering. Tense atmosphere and the police set fire to the powder by gassing the rally. A group of about forty demonstrators extricated themselves towards the city center and passed not far from the rue du Cornet where the Angevin fascists, despite the administrative dissolution of the alvarium, still have their premises thanks to their decadent and decrepit bourgeois friend: Axel Levavasseur who bought and offered them places.

Qulibets burst out and the stuffed fafs (sticks, baseball bats, gas) come out of their street and injure several people (several will have to go to the hospital, one will receive according to the press 16 stitches in the head ), kicking and sticking them, shouting nationalist slogans and racist insanities at passers-by: “Dirty blacks, dirty monkeys, we’re going to kill you” reports another journalist.

The scene is filmed from all sides and floods social networks. It is clear that Jean-Eudes Gannat is in charge of his troupe and that he is accompanied by the same eternal fascists or even Nazis for some. We thus find: Gaspard Beaumier (future heir to a flourishing company, puppet leader of the RED who succeeded the alvarium for the facade, fan of NSBM), Théodore Riant (convicted for violence), Adrien Rivière (condemned to suspended prison sentence for violence), Côme Julien de Pommerol, Aurélien Flottes (whose muscles monopolize the blood intended for the brain), Hugues Soreau (the one armed with a long stick), a violent Italian militant known under the pseudonym of zing_her, and and so on.

The attackers are collectively repelled as the police arrive and protect them from possible retaliations behind two screen-printed cars parked in front of their premises.

The case has a big echo. Those who oppose racism and police violence are forbidden to express themselves and hunted down by the police, while racist aggressors in meetings are escorted home and protected.

One and then two investigations were opened by the public prosecutor, we learned in the press. We no longer count these famous surveys as most of the time they do not lead to anything tangible. Monday, July 3 in the morning, the alvarium is briefly searched in order to get hold of the sticks and bats exhibited the last two days. The usual little music starts on the side of chef Jean-Eudes Gannat who cries out for persecution (and commits a magnificent slip in a video confusing avarium and RED) and above all begs for money (a real tic of language at home the word “cagnotte”). When the group was active under the avarium label, they cried libel whenever they were called violent bullies. A video intended to be ironic had even been broadcast. Masked, the activists of the group manipulated baseball bats in front of their premises, using the sexist prejudice that women cannot be violent in order to make fun of their reputation for brutality. But now, it’s Jean-Eudes Gannat and his friends who occupy rue du Cornet with bats and that’s no longer irony. However, make no mistake about it, the alvarium/RED has not changed its strategy, it is simply that they and they assume more their fascist ideology and their mode of action which place them in line with the squadrist heritage.

The next day, Saturday July 1, we learn in the evening that the same team, considerably reinforced by activists from other cities, “patrol” in town, “equipped” and masked. Several dozen fafs are therefore peacefully using their right to impunity, so to speak. The word is circulating and young people from the neighborhoods (but not only) have understood that if they do not want to be taken for game, they have to defend themselves with ardor. When the fafs return to their burrow on rue du Cornet, a group of young people arrives. When the tension rose, as always the police arrived, gassed massively then blocked the street in order to protect the faves, control and arrest opponents. During the night, an indignant person pointing to “the masked Nazis in the street” will be retorted by a cop: “He is a Nazi, so what? He has the right. “. His colleagues smile.

After six years of public inaction, the fascist violence that has spread in the eyes of all as well as the behavior of the police has the effect of a spark and sets fire to the powder. Monday July 3 in the evening several dozen people gather in rue du Cornet. Like the other nights, the nationalists throw bottles from the floor and a group led by Marc de Cacqueray-Valmenier (hooded but recognized by his Venum shorts) yet subject to strict judicial control, helped by a few gudards, tries to repel the assault. The same scenario repeated itself and the police cleared the street with LBDs, seriously injuring several opponents of the alvarium and sparing the militiamen.

Since 2018, Christophe Béchu (then mayor) has used the tired and lazy rhetoric of the extremes that come together. When questioned about the far right and its violence, he systematically evacuates the subject by evoking in symmetry fantasized far-left violence (from 9min30 in particular). We know that this strategy benefits nationalists, giving them the image of people who are certainly “a bit radical” but whose ideas are only “opinions” after all. This strategy is taken up by Jean-Marc Verchère, his temporary worker, and the prefect Pierre Ory, who in a joint declaration affirm: “The clashes which oppose, for the fourth consecutive night, ultra-right activists and individuals responding to calls for violence of the ultra-left are unacceptable. “Calls for violence from our camp that the two thieves would be hard pressed to expose and above all the evacuation of the popular self-defense dimension of the Angevins in the face of extreme right-wing exactions that took place in broad daylight and go unpunished. They continue: “We are neither tolerant nor complacent in the face of violence from the extremes. This pressing need to exculpate has all the reaction of kids stung to the quick. But above all by an amalgam that is not based on anything tangible, shame is thrown on our social camp. The prefecture and the municipality are showing their usual contempt by ignoring the inhabitants who have always mobilized spontaneously and massively against the far right. Infantilizing people by making them look like pawns manipulated by an “ultra-left” maneuver is a confusing process that we have been denouncing for a long time. The height of spinelessness is reached when they claim to examine “all the measures that could be taken to put an end to these clashes”. We take this opportunity to remind you here of our support for the inhabitants of rue du Cornet who live daily the repercussions of an abject and dishonest strategy of the prefecture and the municipality.

it will have taken more than a dozen cases following racist and/or LGBTQ+phobic violence, group assaults, tags based on Celtic crosses, racist banners, defamation, attacks on occupations, so that the alvarium is dissolved. A long-term leniency that says a lot about the tolerance enjoyed by this very bourgeois and thus well-integrated fascist youth (the Levavasseur family is in the running to sell land to the state to build the future prison of Angers). A complacency that makes you dizzy. For our city councilors, if the far right does not parade in Nazi uniform, it seems that it simply does not pose a problem. We hardly caricature. But the Nazis will not return in uniform and our elected officials will quietly be able to continue to deny that an ultra-violent racist group is rampant in Angers.

We had warned that the dissolution was only window dressing, that as long as this militia would have a place there would be no respite and that cyclically violence against people would return. The situation has deteriorated because now, in addition to the alvarium, the group has secretly taken over a former bar: Le Bazar, located 200 meters from the alvarium. A presence once again made possible thanks to their bourgeois friendships. This time thanks to the former owner of the bar, Aloïs Haven and his family SCI Les Etagères.

The city hall’s response? None. Finally, recently this same municipality allowed the installation of a company created by some of these nationalist activists in the new Biltoki halls. The Whites of the West have thus set up shop thanks to a lot of public money and a worrying laissez-faire (so worrying that the term seems too weak to describe the situation) despite a large unitary mobilization and a dynamic pressure campaign still in progress. course. So it’s been six years, about the alvarium and now his false nose of the RED which took over at the dissolution, we warn that the “social” is only a veneer among the nationalists to have hands free and create a diversion.

Facts are stubborn and have never proven us wrong yet. Step by step, the same nationalist band acts peacefully and the episodes of violence against people are recurrent and predictable. The angevin.es (including us) know that to push back the fascists it is necessary to go through a popular mobilization. Antifascism is everyone’s business. This is how we made them lose their first premises, this is how their community garden became a fallow again (which it already was, to tell the truth), this is how they were rejected from the movement of the Yellow Vests, this is how the Angevins are turning away from the products of the Whites of the West and that we will tear their exclusion from the halls. The list of our small victories is long, but to confront the nationalists is to confront the tolerance of the town hall which spares them, it is to upset the Angevin bourgeoisie which adapts without difficulty to the stench if it pays off and responds to its interests of class, it is also having to face the police and the State which do not have the same leniency towards us. We are aware that the dynamics at work are powerful and go far beyond the Angevin microcosm. With you we stay the course. We will not leave the street to the fascists. Together we will close the alvarium and the other fascist settlements. We will not compromise on this objective, which calls for others.
